 in\, M.S.W. is an internationally prominent youth care training specialist
 \, author and motivational speaker whose primary focus is on teaching posi
 tive\, strength-based theories and techniques to professionals who guide a
 t-risk children\, youth and families. \n\nCharles works primarily with tre
 atment facilities\, foster care associations\, parent groups\, schools\, a
 nd juvenile justice programs. He has authored three youth care books that 
 are widely used within the field\, including <i>No Such Thing as a Bad Kid
 : Understanding and Responding to Kids with Emotional & Behavioral Challen
 ges Using a Positive\, Strength-Based Approach.</i> Charlie’s strength-bas
 ed approach delivers a message of hope and possibility to our most vulnera
 ble children and those who shape and influence their lives.\n\nStrength-ba
 sed practice is an emerging approach to guiding at-risk children\, youth\,
  and families that is exceptionally positive and inspiring. Its focus is o
 n strength-building rather than flaw-fixing. It begins with the belief tha
 t every young person has or can develop strengths and utilize past success
 es to mitigate problem behavior and enhance academic and social functionin
 g. This presentation will highlight many of the key principles and techniq
 ues of this transforming modality. \n\nCharles will also discuss strategie
 s for understanding and guiding children and youth victimized by the recen
 t fires\, including: dealing with grief\, how trauma can affect developmen
 tal stages\, and strategic verbal interventions to help professionals bett
 er engage and assist these kids.   \n\nAdditional topics  include: \n<ul><
 li>What is strength-based practice & the power of a positive attitude & cu
 lture</li>\n<li>The effects of trauma and positive emotions on the brain</
 li>\n<li>Mindset changing\, strength-based communication principles and te
 chniques - including re-framing\, using solution-focused questions\, posit
 ive-predicting and inspirational metaphors</li>\n<li>Self-esteem building 
 & activities for at-risk children and youth\; how to help cognitively infl
 exible kids</li>\n<li>The importance of being family-friendly</li>\n<li>Wh
 y\, how\, and when to use incentive plans</li>\n<li>The importance of cont
 rolling personal emotions (i.e. managing number one first)</li>\n<li>Respe
 ctful\, relationship-based limit setting\; and a host of creative cognitiv
