Creative Arts

Why the Creative Arts?

At Child Parent Institute, we know that expanding access to the arts is an upstream investment that yields lifelong positive results. Participating in the arts builds empathy, strengthens social and emotional skills, and boosts academic achievement. Students involved in the arts become more active and engaged citizens – voting, volunteering, and participating in their communities at higher rates than their peers.

The arts are especially transformative for young people who have experienced trauma or challenges. Trauma and chronic stress can alter the very architecture of the developing brain. Thankfully, these changes can be allayed when addressed early in life – and engagement in the arts affects precisely the parts of the brain impacted by trauma. CPI’s creative arts team includes art therapists, working artists, and artist-educators who deliver programming that ranges from therapeutic and expressive to educational and recreational.

The arts strengthen parent engagement, broaden parents’ understanding of their children, and provide opportunities for social connections. Several of these factors have been proven to help reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect while strengthening families and communities.

Chalkboard Players

CPI’s performing arts troupe, Chalkboard Players, specializes in theatre, music, movement, and fun! This troupe of artist-educators develops and leads interactive performing arts activities, programs, and shows for children and families, especially those who may lack access to the arts due to income, special needs, or other barriers.
